The mother of fugitive Texas teenager Ethan Couch is seeking a reduction of her $1 million bond after being charged with hindering the apprehension of a felon in the headline-grabbing "affluenza" case.

Tonya Couch was set to appear on Jan. 11, at the Tarrant County Justice Center in Fort Worth and might also plead not guilty during the hearing, KTVT reported.

The 48-year-old woman's attorneys will likely argue that her current bond is excessive and unreasonable and complain that Tarrant County Sheriff Dee Anderson last week spoke with their client when she did not have her lawyers present, the Dallas/Fort Worth CBS affiliate noted based on court documents.

Court orders psychological checkup

Meanwhile, Tarrant County Magistrate Judge Matt King ordered Tanya to undergo a psychological exam after the court found "reasonable cause" to believe that she suffers from "a mental illness or is a person with a mental retardation," CNN revealed.

She has been accused of helping Ethan leave the country for Mexico in an attempt to avoid a probation hearing that may lead to jail time for the teenager. The youngster had been on juvenile probation after being convicted of killing four people in a 2013 drunk-driving wreck.

At the time, his lawyers infamously tried to blame the incident on "affluenza," a condition supposedly brought on by the teen's upper-class upbringing. Ethan disappeared when authorities investigated if he had violated the terms of his probation, and was later apprehended in Mexico, where local officials continue to consider his extradition to the United States.

Details emerge about fight to Mexico

Ethan's Mexican attorney, Fernando Benítez, for time time being seems to have been able to stall the extradition of the 18 year old who is being held at a provincial estancia near Puerto Vallarta, Radio Fórmula noted. After their departure, Ethan and Tonya Couch had hid in a rented condo at a resort development in the Jalisco city before moving on to an apartment in a poorer area, according to the Associated Press.

According to the arrest warrant for Tonya Couch, she withdrew $30,000 from her bank before leaving the U.S. with her son. She and Ethan disconnected their cell phones and Tonya allegedly told Ethan's father, Fred Couch, that he would never see his son again, KTVT detailed.
