El Chapo's Fashion Becomes Latest Hollywood Trend
The nightclub style shirts worn by Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzmán during his Rolling Stone interview with Sean Penn -- conducted just before the drug kingpin's recapture by the Mexican government -- have become the latest Hollywood fashion trend.
According to TMZ, sales of the colorfully designed shirts are soaring through the roof at the L.A. shop Barabas, which features pictures of Guzmán on its website. The store manager adds sales have been so brisk, the website initially crashed from all the added traffic.
The "Fantasy" men's button-down with stripes and the "Crazy Paisley" men's button-down are both said to be priced at $128.
Meanwhile, Guzmán sits in a Mexican jail awaiting formal word on whether he will be extradited to the states to face drug charges. Authorities estimate that as much as 25 percent of all the drugs that flow into the U.S. come through his drug operations. Over the years, the kingpin has been indicted on federal charges in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, several media outlets have pegged his wealth in the neighborhood of $3 billion.
Guzmán escaped from custody over the summer and was on the loose for several months, before the interview he secretly plotted with Penn helped lead authorities to his whereabouts. The breakout marked the second time Guzmán had successfully escaped custody over the last 14 years.
The Academy Award-winning Penn and actress Kate del Castillo, who is rumored to have brokered the meeting, are now rumored to be under investigation by the Mexican government.
Guzmán was recaptured after a bloody shootout with Marines that left five of his henchmen dead and several others injured.
Republican presidential candidate Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is among the growing faction insisting that Guzmán should be extradited to the states to make certain he's not allowed to again slip away from custody.
