Season 3 may have been the last for "Hannibal" on NBC, but there is reason to believe that the show may now find a new home for the much awaited Season 4 of the series, which had a strong cult following when it was canceled last summer.

According to Collider, which did an exclusive interview with series star Hugh Dancy, the potential fourth season of the show would be something fantastic and not at all what fans would expect.

"Bryan [Fuller] pitched it to me ... well, he, described to me in an overview with what he wanted to do with the 4th season, had there been an interest, and it was really fantastic," Dancy said.

Fans of the show and the original novels by author Thomas Harris were expecting the fourth season to finally transition over into Harris' second novel in the series, "The Silence of the Lambs." That was the novel that first introduced Special Agent and FBI trainee Clarice Starling.

However, according to Dancy's description of Fuller's idea for Season 4, that would not have been the case at all.

"It was a complete restart, without describing it -- because who knows, God knows, maybe some way we may be able to do it in the future -- but it took us back to the first season in a very unexpected way, and made total sense of that cliffhanger ending; it seemed justified," Dancy said. "It was born out of a part of one of the books so it was still coming out of that universe, but it wasn't the Clarice 'Silence of the Lambs' storyline."

So fans who have been campaigning for Season 4 of the show to land on a different network should know that it may not be what they expect. But of course, like any good TV series, the best entertainment, even in adaptations, is unexpected.

Surprise is something that the show did very well in its first few seasons. It took the source material from Harris' books and expanded upon it, even swapping the genders of some roles to fit the storyline for the series better.

Dancy fell short of saying where the show has the most potential to land, but he did say that he and his costars are on board for Season 4, should it happen.
