Spotify Adds New Lyrics, Artist Commentary, Trivia
Spotify is the leader when it comes to streaming music services, but it is always looking to improve. The platform is starting to add more information about tracks already featured on the site.
Spotify has partnered with lyrics company Genius to display lyrics and extra information about songs as they play, Tech Radar reports.
Spotify users will start seeing lyrics, artist commentary and even small bits of trivia, instead of just the album cover for the song or artist they are currently listening to.
The new added information for tracks is currently being previewed on select Spotify playlists including Behind the Lyrics: Hip Hop. Genius says more playlists will soon get the lyrics and extra information. The feature is available on iOS devices and will soon be coming to Android devices as well.
Spotify users will also be able to access the added features on the web. Once the Spotify app is installed to their desktops, listeners can find a song that supports the feature and then click on the Watch Fast Track with Spotify button. Lyrics, quotes from the artist, and other facts about the song or artist will be displayed.
Genius already has a big list of hip-hop songs that support the feature on Spotify.
Here are some of the songs that work with the Genius feature:
- Usher-Climax
- T.I.-Broadcast Live
- The Game-100
- Rick Ross-Sorry
- R. City-Make Up
- Nelly-The Fix
Users will be able to find out more in-depth background about some songs. For instance, the word "Umi" in Coldplay's "Adventure of a Lifetime" means "mother" in Arabic and "ocean" in Japanese. That is just one Fast Track fact that can be shown thanks to the new feature.
The artist commentary can also help connect users with the music they are listening to. Artists can explain why they wrote a particular song or describe the creation process.
Meanwhile, Spotify's biggest competitor Apple Music this week announced that its paid service already has 10 million members.
