Two Separate Attacks On LAPD Officers In 24 Hours
There were two separate shootings on Tuesday involving LAPD officers, and on Wednesday one of the suspected assailants was pronounced dead after an extended standoff with the police department. The other suspect is still on the run, and his identity remains unknown.
In the first case, an LAPD officer and a probation officer were approaching the suspect's house in Willowbrook to do a probation check. They began to search the house when suddenly they were ambushed by the suspect, who remains unnamed, ambushed them while they were performing the search, shooting both officers once before they could escape danger.
"This incident certainly highlights the dangerous and unpredictable nature of what probation and police officers encounter everyday in our community," said County Probation Chief Jerry Powers.
Luckily, the injuries sustained by the two officers were not life-threatening, and soon a SWAT team was called in to surround the house. From there, a 13 hour standoff ensued wherein SWAT member entered the house only to find the suspect already dead. It is not yet known specifically how he died.
"I don't have confirmation that he was shot. I do have confirmation that he did have injuries on him," said LAPD Lt. Andy Neiman. "How he sustained those injuries, whether it was gunshot, whether it was some other type of injury, I don't know, but there was evidence of blood."
In the second case, a man dressed in black ambushed two undercover detectives as they were returning to a police station on Thursday morning. Again, both of the injuries sustained by the officers were not life-threatening, and both had even recovered enough to help aid in the search of the suspect. It's not believed that the two incidents were related.
"I am positive that they are not connected," noted Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck. "The distance is too great. Obviously, the parole-probation search is an officer initiated activity unlike the randomness on the first occurrence."
The suspect in the second case is still at large. Authorities have questioned at least 10 people they believe may have a connection to the case, but still have not made any arrests. The detectives who were attacked were assigned to an undercover burglary task force.
