Weekend Preview 2014: 'Brick Mansions,' 'The Other Woman' and 'Locke' Among New Releases
On April 25, a number of new films will enter the marketplace. Here's a list of this week's new releases.
Brick Mansions: Relativity will release Paul Walker's last film. The movie tells the story of an undercover cop who navigates a dangerous neighborhood with the help of an ex-con in order to bring down a crime lord and his plot to devastate the entire city. The film has proven a tricky sell for the distributor but it is likely that Walker fans will flock to the movies to see his last project. The distributor opens the movie in 2,400 theaters.
The Other Woman: Cameron Diaz returns to the big screen with Kate Upton in her film debut. The movie, which was directed by Nick Cassavetes, tells the story of Carly, who breaks up with her boyfriend when she finds out he is married. Her life changes, however, when she meets the wife he's been cheating on and she later discovers another affair. As a result all three women team up to plot mutual revenge on their lover. The movie has obtained mixed reviews and based on Diaz's latest box office results, this movie is unlikely to hit the jackpot. Fox will release the movie in 3,000 theaters.
The Quiet Ones: Yet another horror movie enters the marketplace. Lionsgate will release movie a few weeks after "Oculus," which bombed. The new film, starring Sam Claflin and Jared Harris, tells the story a university professor and a team of students who conduct an experiment on a young woman, uncovering terrifyingly dark, unexpected forces in the process. The movie premiered in London earlier this month but has obtained mixed reviews. Lionsgate will release the film in 2,000 theaters.
Locke: On the heels of "Gravity" and "All is Lost," A24 will release yet another one-actor movie. This time, Tom Hardy stars in a movie which tells the story of a successful construction manager's life who is drastically changed by a series of phone calls while he drives. The movie premiered at the Venice Film Festival where it received rave reviews. The movie was later nominated for a number of British Independent Film Awards and won Best Screenplay. The film will open in limited release and later expand.
Blue Ruin: Having premiered at the Canes Film Festival and won the Director's Fortnight FIPRESCI Prize, Jeremy Saulnier's latest film opens in VOD and theaters. The film tells the story of a mysterious outsider's quiet life which is turned upside down when he returns to his childhood home to carry out an act of vengeance. Radius TWC will open the film in six theaters.
Other films that will open this week include Tribeca Film's "Beneath the Harvest Sky" and Sony Pictures Classics' documentary "For No Good Reason." Meanwhile, IFC Films will open Francois Ozon's Cannes competitor "Young and Beautiful."
Sony Pictures Classics will also expand "Only Lovers Left Alive," which opened two weeks ago to rave reviews. The Weinstein Company will also expand "The Railway Man," which has not fared as well at the box office. Meanwhile, A24 will also expand "Under the Skin" after a successful limited release.
