Fans of "The Originals" can look forward to seeing a long awaited crossover with "The Vampire Diaries," more family drama among the Mikaelson clan, and a new dangerous, vengeful vampire when the series returns from its winter hiatus next week.

Executive producer Julie Plec revealed that Stefan (Paul Wesley) will step onto Mikaelson territory when he pays a visit to the French Quarter in order to find a refuge from magic.

The crossover event kicks off during Season 7 Episode 14 of "The Vampire Diaries," in which "Stefan finds himself very much in need of a mystical safe haven" at The St. James Infirmary, a magic-free bar," Plec told TVLine. That's where he'll run into Klaus (Joseph Morgan), a meeting which Plec described as "the reunion of the Bourbon buddies."

Stefan will then remain in New Orleans during an episode of "The Originals," Plec continued, "To help Klaus clear up some business that he's dealing with at the moment that actually has a direct impact on Stefan himself."

When asked if Caroline (Candice King) will also make a trip to The Big Easy, the showrunner replied, "All I can say is that Caroline has an involvement in the way that we've decided to dramatize the crossover, and I'm sure there are spoilers aplenty if people want to read further."

CW president Mark Pedowitz also talked about the upcoming crossover at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena.

"You will see, organically, a crossover this year," Pedowitz confirmed. "Not of the size and scope of we do with Arrow and Flash. They have to make sense [story-wise]."

It has also been reported by TVLine that "Devious Maids" star Matt Cedeño has been tapped to play a new character named Cortez, who is described as a "callous, smart and manipulative vampire from the Mikaelsons' past who comes to New Orleans seeking vengeance."

Not only will Cortez pay an unwelcome visit to the French Quarter in Episode 15, but it also appears that he will use his wit to get revenge.

"Cortez is someone who was sired by a unique circumstance," executive producer Michael Narducci said. "He has a very interesting perspective, particularly on Klaus. He's of Klaus' sire line, but he was not sired by Klaus. He's a very intriguing character, one of the most dangerous folks we've met."

Season 3 of "The Originals" will return on Friday, Jan. 29 at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
