There is no official word yet on whether Chris Weidman will get a rematch for the UFC middleweight title that he lost last month to Luke Rockhold but recent developments could make all that a formality soon.

Weidman seems to be up to date with the happenings around the UFC, checking on the fate of several names linked for a possible title shot against Rockhold.

A sound name is Vitor Belfort, who Rockhold has reason to face once again. Belfort is responsible for one of Rockhold’s stinging defeats back in 2013.

However, Rockhold may have to wait a bit for that to happen since the Brazilian fighter has been booked to face Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza instead this coming May 14.

With two names out of the picture, Yoel Romero was the only one left in the mix. There are many who want to see what the Cuban fighter could do against Rockhold but even that possibility has now been nixed.

Romero has been suspended for failed USADA tests (via MMAMania), and that negated all hopes of seeing an interesting matchup as well.

"He's been keeping up with the news on Yoel Romero and the just announced Vitor-Jacare fight. He's begun training for rematch with Luke Rockhold. He hasn't been told he's getting that fight yet. He says he wants to fight for it any time. At UFC 199, any time, he wants the rematch," says Ariel Herwani.

With all those names out, Weidman stood as the lone man who Rockhold could face unless the UFC opts to find another one to deal in.

Regardless, Weidman has taken the initiative to hit training camp and prepare for the inevitable. The possibility of a rematch offers better chances. If everything falls into place, that rematch could take place at UFC 199, which will reportedly be held on Memorial Day Weekend via MMAFighting.com.

If their last fight is a gauge, not too many were impressed with the showing that Weidman gave. It is for that reason that many felt it would have been best for the UFC to consider other fighters to face Rockhold instead until the recent series of events.

Rockhold is open and ready to fight at UFC 199 or even UFC 200 depending on what Dana White and company feels is best. There is no surety of Weidman getting a rematch, but with not many names to work on as we speak, it stands as a big possibility.
