Kate del Castillo Says Mexican Government is Trying to 'Destroy Her'
Kate del Castillo, the Mexican actress who helped Sean Penn interview drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, is claiming the Mexican government wants to destroy her.
The 43-year-old, who recently starred in "33," refused to explain matters further.
"If I don't talk it's because my lawyers told me not to because the government wants to destroy me," del Castillo said in a statement sent to Univision.
Mexican Attorney General Arely Gomez said there were signs Del Castillo may have used Guzman’s financial assistance to help fund her her tequila business, AFP reported. The Attorney General’s office also said del Castillo may be guilty of money laundering.
"There are signs, but we need legal certainty," Gomez said.
Mexico's Attorney General's office guaranteed the actress is still presumed innocence.
The Mexican government asserts that the meeting between Sean Penn and Guzman, which was facilitated by del Castillo, was essential to recapturing the Sinaloa Cartel leader.
Since his Jan. 8 arrest, Guzman has complained he is not able to get a proper night’s sleep because of hourly checkups and noise coming from a security dog.
As the Daily Mail reports, Guzman’s attorney, Jose Gonzalez, shared a text from his client via a third party.
“I haven't been able to sleep at all,” Guzman said. "They wake me up to take the register every hour during the day and every two hours at night, and there is a dog next to me which barks a lot and stops me sleeping."
The president of Mexico, Enrique Pena Nieto, said the State Attorney General is working working to speed up El Chapo’s extradition to the U.S.
