WWE: Original Royal Rumble Ending, Fastlane Main Event Plans Revealed
The Royal Rumble ended with a new WWE World Heavyweight champion with Triple H coming out on top as the Road to WrestleMania 32 officially started. The main event for February's pay-per-view Fastlane is already set with Roman Reigns vs. Dean Ambrose vs. Brock Lesnar in a Triple Threat Match to determine the new number one contender for the WWE title.
According to Cageside Seats, the original plan for the final two participants was supposed to be Triple H and Roman Reigns. However, an audible was reportedly called during the match, halfway through the Rumble to change the planned finish and have Dean Ambrose in the final two instead.
Inquisitr notes that Triple H has always been the planned winner, but the crowd's reaction towards Reigns has forced WWE's hand to alter plans mid-match. In last year's Rumble event when Reigns won, he was booed out of the building that even The Rock's presence could not overcome.
The whole scenario kind of worked for WWE with "The Big Dog," failing to win the WWE championship at WrestleMania 31, but it created a superstar heel in Seth Rollins. The now former two-time WWE champion got over the crowd towards the end of the year with the help of Mr. McMahon's appearance.
However, despite WWE trying to make Reigns as an underdog, it failed because it was obvious that he would be coming out on top, which the fans already knew. He also got beat up by the League of Nations and was helped to the back by the medical staff.
WWE fans also knew that he would be reappearing in the Rumble when he attacked Sheamus, who entered the match at number 29. The Orlando crowd barely reacted to Reigns when he returned, and while he was gone, fans chanted "A.J. Styles" loudly more than anything.
In a report by PW Mania, the original plan for Fastlane's main event was Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns. Inquisitr pointed out that the WWE had to insert Ambrose in the picture because he was one of the final two the Rumble and it does make sense for him to have the opportunity to be number one contender.
The WWE will have two more months to build Triple H vs. Roman Reigns for WrestleMania 32, but the reaction of the crowd will be very interesting. On the other hand, Lesnar is set to enter a feud with The Wyatt Family and Ambrose is still the Intercontinental champion.
