MLB: Yoenis Cespedes Officially Inks New Deal with New York Mets
Yoenis Cespedes will remain with the New York Mets after multiple outlets revealed that the Cuban-born outfielder agreed to a new three-year deal believed to be worth around $75 million.
The deal includes an opt-out clause after the 2016 season.
Cespedes is the 11th Cuban player to play for the Mets, and he had eye-popping numbers in 2015.
That included finishing third in the Majors with 83 extra-base hits, sixth in doubles and ninth in RBIs.
Mets general manager Sandy Alderson admitted that Cespedes was a big reason behind the success of the ballclub last year, and it was a no-brainer that management backed Alderson up as far as bringing back the 30-year-old outfielder.
The recent turn of events should be a big reprieve for Mets fans, particularly since team officials felt that their chances of signing Cespedes was not that good.
La Potencia was apparently looking for a long-term deal, and the Washington Nationals almost came close to giving him that.
The Nationals dangled a five-year $110 million deal to Cespedes but significant deferrals spread over 15 years, which made the present-day value of the contract at $77 million.
With that said and seeing that he didn’t stand to gain anything, Cespedes probably made the best out of his choices, that of which is to stay at home.
“In a short period of time, my teammates and the fans made New York feel like home, and I truly felt embraced by the entire organization. As I entered free agency, I couldn’t deny the pull to come back and finish what we had started last year. I am excited to finally announce that next season I am coming back to join the New York Mets once again,” says Cespedes via the NY Post.
To his credit, Cespedes is a 2014 All-Star and 2015 American League Gold Glove winner. He has led the Majors with 28 outfield assists ever since debuting in 2012.
With his return, the Mets seem primed to indeed defend their NL East title. The new deal also places the Mets’ payroll at $140 million, the highest in five years.
With Cespedes in tow, more key players are slated to enter the fold soon. That includes free agents Bartolo Colon and Jerry Blevins. Aside from that, the Mets have also acquired the services of second baseman Neil Walker as the team beefs up key positions next season.
Other than those mentioned, the Mets plan to add more depth to the bullpen. However, with a high payroll, further additions to the ballclub could be players who will receive minor league contract figures.
