iOS 9.3 Now Available to Beta Testers -- What We Know so Far
The latest iOS 9.3 beta is currently available to testers. The new version allows accessory firmware updates via the iPad Pro Smart Connector. It is the second beta of iOS 9.3 that lets iPad Pro users update the firmware on a number of accessories through the connector.
Apple Insider wrote that the second version of iOS 9.3 beta was introduced on Wednesday. Cult of Mac revealed that Stefan Wolfrum, a developer and iPad Pro user, recently discovered that the beta advised him to update the firmware on his Logitech Create keyboard when he connected it.
The update fixed a number of problems concerning the accessory device, such as delay and dropped keystrokes. Apple Insider later confirmed the new support, using the same type of keyboard. As soon as the update starts, the entire process should only take several seconds.
“Apparently, iOS 9.3 beta 2 is able to update the firmware of a Smart Connector keyboard — and actually did this with the Logitech Create keyboard I’ve currently connected to my iPad Pro!” Wolfrum wrote in a Logitech support forum.
According to MacRumors, developers recreated the process leading towards the update by updating the iPad Pro to the second beta and linking the keyboard. As soon as the keyboard is linked, a pop-up display will alert users to an “accessory update,” as well as askwhether they wish to update the “Smart Connector Accessory.”
A user who opts to update will see the pop-up remain on the display and feature the update progress. As soon as the progress reaches 100 percent, the dialog box will close. MacRumors stated that their update took only 30 to 40 seconds. There was no indication, however, that the update has changed after the whole process was finished.
Previously, Apple featured the ability of the Smart Connector and Logitech Create to provide both power and data, although they did not state the potential of updating firmware using the device. Other features of the new update include individually encrypted notes, 3D Touch actions and a Night Shift mode that adjusts the color temperature of the display after sunset. More feature and capabilities are expected when the full version launches.
It remains uncertain whether the new iOS beta included the firmware update or if it immediately pinged a server to download the version before application. More updates and details on iOS 9.3 are expected soon.
