UFC: Anthony Johnson Eyeing Title Fight Against Daniel Cormier, Jon Jones
Anthony Johnson is ready for a second chance at the UFC light heavyweight title though that chance may take a while.
Johnson is looking forward to that opportunity, though, after catapulting himself to the no. 1 contender spot following a first round KO win over Ryan Bader at UFC Fox on 18 held in Newark, New Jersey.
It was a big win for ‘Rumble,’ who has now racked up two straight wins since losing to reigning champion Daniel Cormier at UFC 187 in May last year. It was a statement win for Johnson, who answered in a pretty big way the mentally weak comments thrown at him by Bader’s camp.
"They brainwashed him to make him think I was actually mentally weak," Johnson said via MMAFighting.com. "That's fine with me. I won. To me, who's the weak one?"
With that out of the way, Johnson is now looking forward to getting another shot at the title.
Last year, he had that opportunity though a sudden change of plans for UFC 187 threw him a bit off guard.
Johnson was originally scheduled to face Jon Jones that night until ‘Bones’ got arrested and was eventually stripped of the title.
"I was getting ready for Jon Jones not Daniel Cormier. It's a big difference when you're getting ready for 6-(foot)-4 compared to 5-10, 5-11, something like that. I wasn't (ready) but I still went out there and did my best," Johnson said via Fox Sports.
Learning the hard way, Johnson vows that the second time will be different. This is assuming that Cormier is able to retain the title against Jones though.
Cormier and Jones are expected to be getting their rematch soon, though, the UFC has yet to officially name the date and place where all that will happen.
The latest word on that is that the Cormier-Jones 2 could be announced in the coming days via MMAFighting.com.
Aware of such, Johnson is willing to wait on who between the two will eventually come out the champion.
However, that doesn’t mean he will reserve himself until that fight happens.
"I ain't going to say (I'll wait) no matter what because if somebody gets hurt and they need a replacement, I'll definitely jump in if I'm healthy and able to fight -- that's for light heavy and heavy," Johnson said.
Johnson has been known to take on all comers, never backing down from any challenge thrown his way. And as he stressed, it is still a ‘paycheck’.
