NFL Rumors: Colin Kaepernick Headed to New York Jets?
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick wants out but a $114 million contract stands in the way, per the Daily News. The embattled quarterback reportedly wants out of the 49ers camp and is leaning on joining the New York Jets.
The choice of team seems fit considering the Jets are in need of a quarterback. They are currently in offseason planning and evaluation and hearing about this should be an intriguing option for New York.
The thing is, landing Kaepernick may be easier said than done. The Jets are careful on possible talks as they try to avoid tampering issues that could be tied up to the quarterback as mentioned in the Daily News.
Right now, the Jets are still looking into the possible re-signing of Ryan Fitzpatrick but nothing has materialized for now. To do that, the Jets and the 49ers may need to enter a trade to make it happen. Either that or New York will have to wait until Kaepernick is officially cut, per the news outlet.
The 49ers have until April 1 to decide on Kaepernick’s fate. If the club decides to cut him, they stand to save about $8.5 million as Kaepernick is on the verge of seeing his salary jump up to $15.9 million.
Kaepernick is coming off a forgettable 2015 season, which saw him benched midway. Other than that, a coaching change (Chip Kelly) comes into play, part of the complications that could hinder a possible move by Kaepernick.
Also, team owner Jed York seems to have not given up on Kaepernick, especially with Kelly now on board.
"I've always had a very, very high opinion of Kap,” York said via Daily News. “Kap's a great kid. He's done a lot of great things for us. Again, this is a fresh start for everybody.”
But then again, a broken relationship from last season may not make that feasible at this point. Assuming their ties are beyond repair, what would the 49ers want in exchange for the 28-year-old quarterback? Right now a viable option would be future draft picks.
The outlet says that as far as the Jets are concerned, it may be best to wait and see if Kaepernick is released. This way, the club can sign up the troubled player for less.
As it stands, Kaepernick could very well be plan B. Fitzpatrick seems to be the guy they are considering now though he is just a short-term solution, per a report from the Washington Post.
Between the two, Kaepernick is a proven player. Aside from being five years younger, he has already played in the postseason where he led the 49ers to a conference championship and the Super Bowl.
