Manny Pacquiao may have made a big mistake when he tackled the LGBT issue and such has resulted in never-ending backlash for the Filipino boxing icon.

Pacquiao drew heavy fire after making a controversial quote of saying that LGBTs were worse than animals, but would later on apologize for his remarks.

“Animals are better because they can distinguish male from female. If men mate with men and women mate with women, they are worse than animals," Pacquiao said.

Despite his apology, however, Pacquiao explained and stood pat that he was simply voicing his own opinion. While that would have stood out for any normal person, the fact is that his popularity is a given and he does have millions of followers and supporters.

Nike pulled the plug on their contract with Pacquiao and there are some companies reportedly following soon. Will all these affect his political aspiration as well?

Benito Lim, a political science professor from one of the reputable schools in the Philippines, believes that it may not necessarily affect his chances.

"Pacquiao has clearly offended the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community with his comments on same sex marriage, but this group represents a minority and this will not affect the boxer's popularity among the voters," said Lim.

His views were further supported by another famed political analyst, Ramon Casiple of the Institute of Political and Electoral Reforms.

"He stirred a hornet's nest, so there's danger that he could lose support, but, so far, we don't see any indication of that," Casiple said.

The issue went globally viral as well. Local personalities aired their condemnation on Pacquiao’s rant but even global names got into the act as well.

That includes Floyd Mayweather Jr. who vouched for the gay community from a previous post.

The latest celebrity to voice out his dismay over Pacquiao’s derogatory remarks is Los Angeles Lakers great Earvin "Magic" Johnson.

Johnson aired his piece on Twitter and mentioned he would be boycotting all of Manny Pacquiao's fights.

Meanwhile, there is a curious new development tied up with his plans to run for a senate seat. Pacquiao is being urged to voluntarily postpone his fight or face possible disqualification for the upcoming national elections.

“Manny is a great boxer, and I am a fan, but now that he is also a senatorial candidate, he needs to understand that election laws must apply to everyone. There are limits to political advertising,” said former Akbayan representative Walden Bello, who is also running for senator.
