The stage has been finally set for the Canelo Alvarez vs. Amir Khan fight. It will take place on Cinco de Mayo weekend over at the T-Mobile Arena.

The boxing showdown will be the first-ever boxing event to be hosted at the newly opened venue of the Las Vegas strip.

"Boxing in Las Vegas is truly an exciting event, and the fans with tickets to the fight will be in for a treat watching the fight in this new, state-of-the-art venue," said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya on the finalized venue deal.

It will be the voluntary fight that Alvarez has been allowed to take on, before the Mexican and his camp are expected to start negotiations for a bigger blockbuster clash with mandatory WBC contender Gennady Golovkin.

On his end, Golovkin will take on his voluntary match on April 23 against Dominic Wade at the Forum in Inglewood, California.

The voluntary fights have suddenly gotten attention, particularly the one involving Alvarez. In what was initially considered nothing more than a tune-up fight, the selection of Amir Khan has suddenly brought in interest.

This is despite the fact that Khan is questionable heading into the match. The Bolton fighter will try to fit in to the 155 lbs. weight class, meaning he will have to bulk up 8 lbs.

Khan has already been the subject of heavy scrutiny as far as his punching power and glass chin is concerned. In the eyes of some, adding extra weight could hamper his only weapon against Alvarez --speed.

“Weight will not win this fight…My speed and athleticism will be the key factors to winning this fight,” said a confident Khan last week.

Khan is a perennial underdog against the brawling American, but the British southpaw is pretty confident of his chances. In fact, he believes that he will come out victorious and scorn fans who are expecting an Alvarez victory.

“My fight with Canelo Alvarez will be the biggest fight of the year, including the biggest upset of the year,” Khan added.

Unfortunately, there are some who are skeptical of his chances and are more interested in what happens after that tiff.

That blockbuster fight between Alvarez and Golovkin is the one that people want to see, so negotiations after that May 7 fight will be one of the hot developments many will follow.

Among the issues that have yet to be resolved is the catchweight stipulation which Alvarez wants. This is in reference to the 155-lbs. catchweight limit which the WBC and Golovkin are unlikely to bend on.
