Luis Suarez Almost Failed to Suit up Against Arsenal
FC Barcelona relies heavily on their "Trident" or "MSN" as they are now referred to. Had it not for a swift plan of action, the team would have faced Arsenal without one of their top guns such as Luis Suarez.
Suarez left his passport at home as the team was boarding their flight to London. Without a passport, Suarez was forced to stay behind, leaving Lionel Messi and Neymar to carry the team against Arsenal. Thankfully, someone was sent back to the Uruguayan’s home to fetch his passport in time.
Arsenal would have had a great gift had Suarez failed to secure his passport, but it just wasn’t meant to be.
Suarez has been shining for Barcelona, amassing 41 of the 91 goals he shares with Messi and Neymar. But aside from that, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger knows what Suarez brings.
“Suarez is the kind of guy who manages to create that spirit in teams,” said Wenger.
Wenger tried to snatch Suarez back in 2013 from Liverpool, but the Uruguayan soccer player opted to sign up with Barcelona instead. With Barcelona eyeing the Champions League quarter finals, the vaunted triumvirate remained intact. Arsenal failed to catch that break, resulting to Barcelona defeating them 2-0.
However, the match was not really about Suarez, but more on the 2015 Ballon d’Or world’s best Lionel Messi.
The Argentine forward starred in the second half to lead Barcelona. After scoring the first goal, he was also responsible for the second one, which came from penalty.
Though Barca came out with a win, Suarez cautioned that this leg was far from over.
"We know that we have taken advantage but you never know what could happen in Champions League games. Arsenal is fighting to win the Premier League and they have players who can make differences in the second leg," he said.
It will be interesting what adjustments Wenger will have up his sleeve during the return leg. Most likely, it will all be centered on the big "MSN" trio.
Outside Messi, Neymar and Suarez, Barca will have to go through the second leg without Gerard Pique. Pique drew one yellow card as he was having a brief discussion with Luis Enrique. He then got a second one 80 seconds later when he made a sliding challenge against Danny Welbeck.
This counts Pique out for the return leg though he will have a clean disciplinary slate if Barca makes the last eight. The move drew criticism and many claimed that it was done on purpose.
Enrique denied the accusations, saying, “It was not deliberate, anyone who saw the foul knows it.”
