Squirrel Attacks Selfie-Taking Florida Spring Breaker: Victim Brian Genest Says 'It Went From Extremely Cute and Fuzzy to Extreme Attack' [Photo]
You should probably think twice the next time you try to take a selfie with a squirrel. Despite how cute and friendly they may appear, one teenager from Maine learned the hard way that the fuzzy creatures aren't always receptive to photo ops.
During a Spring Break trip to Florida, 17-year-old Brian Genest said he saw a friendly looking squirrel on a handrail while walking through John Chesnut Sr. Park near Tampa. That's when the Auburn, Maine, teenager began to take pictures of it and eventually got close enough to snap a selfie with the little animal. However, once he took the pic, the squirrel went ballistic.
According to Genest, the flash and noises from his camera phone scared the squirrel, which then jumped on his back and climbed under his shirt.
"It went from extremely cute and fuzzy to extreme attack squirrel," Genest told NBC affliate Kxan.
Genest said he started to frantically move his body around to get the squirrel off his back while his mother continued snapping pictures of him.
"I threw myself on the ground, and that scared him off," Genest said, according to The Associated Press.
His mother said he learned a good lesson from the incident, which happened on April 26.
"I think he got a little lesson from the squirrel that he's not really its buddy," Paula Wright said.
She added that neither her son nor the squirrel was harmed.
Genest said that he was surprised when the squirrel attack photos went viral.
"I didn't think it would get this big at all, but it did," he said, adding, "It's awesome."
Genest also made light of the attack. "He was probably mad at me because I was trying to take a photo, and he wasn't going to get any credit," said Genest.
