It's important to make a viable plan of action for your career. Figure out what you want to achieve and then craft a plan to get to this goal. Prepare and learn the industry standards by asking around or checking websites like Salary.com or Payscale.com. In negotiations, wait for the employer to name a figure and ask for a slightly higher number because they don't usually offer the highest amount they're willing to give in the first go.

Prepare for Advancement

Even those who enjoy their current jobs are eventually going to seek a higher position. See if there are opportunities for advancement or bring it up with your boss. More importantly, make sure you're ready when the opportunity comes knocking. Be a good leader within your team and even volunteer to take on additional responsibilities to display your abilities such as supervising interns or heading a new project.

Be Visible in the Industry

Education is not always the most important factor in getting the job, but your network and work experience matter a lot. The connections you have, the more opportunities are available to you. Networking is an important activity in a successful career, so make sure you're a vital part of the industry. Sign up for professional associations and take on more public responsibilities such as facilitating a panel or volunteering to head a committee.

Create Your Brand

It's time to stand out. After all, you're no longer a blank slate or a simple job title. Senior vice president of human resources at NFP Kim Davis told GoBankingRates that branding themselves is "one of the most important things you as a 30-something, career-minded woman can do."
