As expected, Kevin Durant has won the NBA Most Valuable Player award for the 2013-14 season.

This season, Durant averaged a career high 32 points per game, which led the NBA in scoring. This is the fourth time in the last five years Durant has led the NBA in scoring. Durant also increased his assist numbers big time. Durant's previous career high was just 4.6 assists per game, however this season Durant averaged 5.5 assists per game.

Amazingly, Durant did all of this while shooting over 50 percent from the field.

Durant led the Thunder to the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference behind the San Antonio Spurs, so his performance has translated to wins on the court. Other players such as Kevin Love and Carmelo Anthony play great and put up fantastic statistics, but failed to take their teams to the playoffs.

Out of 125 first place votes, Durant received an overwhelming 119 of them. The only other player to receive first place votes other than Durant was LeBron James with just six. The top five MVP players finished as follows:

  1. Kevin Durant - 1,232 points
  2. LeBron James - 891 points
  3. Blake Griffin - 434 points
  4. Joakim Noah - 322 points
  5. James Harden - 85 points

No surprise there. Durant has been the best player this season. He hasn't been in a slump like Paul George and he didn't finish the season on a bad note like James. Of course, Durant is aware that the regular season award will be overshadowed by the Finals award that has been won by his friend/rival James the last two years.

Durant knows that his legacy will be built on what he does in the playoffs and this series against the Los Angeles Clippers is monumental. If Durant were to get eliminated in just the second round, this award wouldn't mean much to him. Durant has shown improvement defensively, and his teamwork has always been sky high. Some people have criticized Durant's will and inability to take control from point guard Russell Westbrook.

Meanwhile, Blake Griffin averaged a career high in points scored per game with 24.3; Joakim Noah won defensive player of the year; and James Harden led the Rockets to the No. 4 seed in the West. Clearly, this list is full of well-deserving candidates.
