Every Time Social Media Got Your Abuela Right
There are certain qualities about grandmothers that most Latino millennials will be able to confirm are actually true. A quick search of #AbuelasBeLike or #GrowingUpHispanic on Instagram yields plenty of memes about abuelas that are sure to bring laughter to Latinos who can relate to.
Below are some of the best. Let us know which one is your favorite.
Fruits You Played With
What held your Abuela's family photos and random numbers on the refrigerator up? Maybe these look familiar. These fruit magnets were pretty much ubiquitous on Latin grandmothers' fridges because they could be found at almost any discount store.
What makes more sense for magnets than fruit?
Reuse and Recycle
Abuela logic that was then passed on to your mother: Why buy containers when you have several already at your disposal? Butter and cookie containers became storage options for beans, tomato paste and homemade sofrito.
The Saddest Day Ever
For your grandmother, the day that "Sabado Gigante" ended, meaning Don Francisco and his famous chacal would no longer be gracing their television screens, was just as bad as the day RBD or N'SYNC broke up -- or the day One Direction announced their separation for younger fans.
Making Sure You're Fed
Your mother may make sure you're taken care of, but it was always and probably still is your grandmother who made sure you ate. A visit to your grandmother's house -- no matter if it's on your own or with a friend, girlfriend or boyfriend -- always prompts a series of questions from your abuela. The second or third question every time is "Have you eaten?"
Cooking More Than Necessary
When it comes to food, your grandmother has a lot of experience. She's been to plenty of social gatherings to know that it's better to have leftovers than be short and leave people hungry. So when she cooks for more than a few people, she overdoes it and cooks for a town, but with good reason.
She'd Do Anything For You
Where do you think you get your tough attitude? Your grandmother is not above the law, but she definitely acted out and did some crazy things if anyone ever insulted one of the following: her food, kids or grandkids.
The Abuela Starter Pack
There are certain items you're sure to catch a Latina grandmother with when doing laundry, shopping for groceries or out and about with a neighbor. She doesn't leave the house without her wooden rosary beads, and her age requires a cart for buying groceries, along with those colorful bags.
