A new Quinnipiac University poll shows Hillary Clinton topping the 50 percent mark in Connecticut and Donald Trump closing in on that same high.

Pollsters found Clinton now leads Democratic challenger and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders 51 percent to 42 percent with less than a week to go before their April 26 showdown.

On the Republican side, Trump leads Ohio Gov. John Kasich among likely GOP voters 48 percent to 28 percent with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz at 19 percent.

Clinton Holds Commanding Lead Among Blacks, Females

A deeper analysis of the numbers reveals Clinton's margin is based on commanding leads among African-American and female voters. Among blacks, the former First Lady and Secretary of State leads 66 percent to 25 percent and among women she holds a 55 percent to 38 percent cushion.

"Secretary Clinton wins on all the most important issues to voters, except for income inequality," said Quinnipiac poll director Douglas Schwartz. "Sen. Sanders wins on honesty, values, and empathy. But Clinton wins by bigger margins on leadership, electability, and experience."

As in most polls, Sanders holds his largest lead among 18 to 34-year-olds, leading Clinton by 47 points among that group, 73 percent to 26 percent.

Trump Holds Huge Lead Among Males

Meanwhile, Trump tops Kasich among men 51 percent to 27 percent and holds a similar lead of 45 percent 30 percent among females.

Researchers found by a 59 percent to 33 percent margin, Connecticut GOP voters favor the idea of outsider sitting in the White House, with 75 percent of all those voters expressing their support for political neophyte Trump.

"Connecticut Republicans have gone for outsider candidates such as Linda McMahon and Tom Foley," Schwartz said. "They continue that trend with Donald Trump."

Among Tea Party voters, Trump gets 62 percent support, with Cruz (24 percent) and Kasich (12 percent) just managing 36 percent support combined.

Trump also gets 37 percent of white born-again Evangelical Christians, with Cruz at 31 percent and Kasich at 30 percent.

A recent NBC/Wall Street Journal national poll also found Trump is now closing in on a record-high 40 percent support.

Overall, pollsters found Trump leading Cruz 40 percent to 35 percent with Kasich stuck in last place at 24 percent.
