Star Wars Spoilers: Darth Maul Star Ray Park Reveals Secrets from Filming "Episode I: The Phantom Menace"
Ray Park may not be the biggest star in Hollywood but he created one of the coolest villains in Star Wars franchise, Darth Maul. The actor and martial artists stepped onto the stage with Warwick Davis for an entertaining discussion to talk about of Darth Maul and the training that was entailed for "The Phantom Menace." Here are some big reveals he made.
1. Dark side vs. light side
When Park was originally cast for the film, he expected to be cast as a good guy and as a Jedi. He had always been a fan of the films especially because he noted that "Empire Strikes Back" was the first film he saw. He also noted that he was scared of Darth Vader and that is why he loved the Jedi. However, when he was cast he realized he would give life to a Sith Lord.
2. Gymnast
Before becoming an actor Park trained as a gymnast and did martial arts. He did a variety of types which helped him train for the film. However, he did not use any of the moves that he knew. For "The Phantom Menace" he was given a set of new moves that would give the character a unique look.
3. Liam vs. Ewan
Asked by an audience member which fight he enjoyed more, Park noted that the fights between Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson were very different. Even the final duel with both of them required a different type of stunt and activity.
4. Training
During the panel Park went on to engage with five lucky audience members and taught them some moves that he learned during the production. He even had some lightsaber duels with some of the audience members and renacted the final duel from "The Phantom Menace."
5. Original ending
According to Park, it was noted that Darth Maul would have his head chopped off by Obiwan. However, Lucas opted out of it because it was too gruesome. He also noted that Darth Maul's horns would also be more useful and that they would be used to attack Qui-Gonn. However, Lucas also noted that it was too much for a family-friendly film.
