Why Gaming is Trending in Brazil
Growing Popularity of MMOs
Brazil's digital game market roughly totaled $1.5 billion in 2014 and is estimated to grow to a whopping $1.6 billion by 2017, with popular video game titles such as League of Legends and Dota 2 literally doubling their market share. However, signs of saturation are beginning to appear. A report by SuperDataResearch revealed that the rate of gaming consumption in Brazil has cooled after years of explosive growth, making way for the rise of other South American countries including Mexico (with 22% of the market share) and Argentina (15%).
Where Brazil continues to enjoy significant growth is in the consumption of massively multiplayer online games (MMOs). These iconic and free-to-play games (World of Warcraft being the most well-known example) see vast numbers of players simultaneously connected in one online universe to carry out missions. Brazil ranks as one of the top 5 MMO investors worldwide, matching the global MMO gaming market trends that has predicted to grow 7.9% per year and reach $30.7 billion in 2017 - the highest growth rate outside of mobile and 31% of total global games market revenues.
Between the rise of video gaming among Brazil's youth and the developing prominence of online poker as a new national sport, the country is experiencing a renaissance when it comes to digital recreation. People there are enjoying new sources of entertainment, both virtually and in person, and for a famously competitive culture, gaming is a natural fit.Whether the thrill comes from getting to the next level or winning a tourney, Brazilians have embraced the world of gaming and made it their own.
