James Franco Instagram: 'Of Mice and Men' Star Slams ‘Spring Breakers’ Sequel, Calls It a 'Poison Ship'
Last week, it was revealed that a "Spring Breakers" sequel was in the works.
Reports surfaced that there was also a possibility that several of the original "Spring Breakers" cast would appear in the second movie including actor James Franco.
At first, Franco alluded to a possible part two of the spring break movie in a recent interview with MTV.
He admitted, "... When we were making the movie, there was talk of a prequel. My character and Gucci Mane's character were supposed to have been former friends, so we at one time talked about, 'What was that like? Let's make that movie!' So there's that. There's a prequel version, or there's the version of Alien's friend or something. I don't know."
Despite his comments, it now seems that Franco has a whole new opinion about "Spring Breakers 2."
As we all know by now, Franco loves making a statement and stirring up controversy on Instagram, so that's precisely what he did.
He explained that he would not partake in the Wild Bunch produced "Spring Breakers" sequel because it is being done without his or the movie's original director, Harmony Korine's consent.
"The original was wholly Harmony's creation and these producers are capitalizing on that innovative film to make money on a weak sequel. I want everyone to know that whoever is involved in the sequel is jumping on board a poison ship. It will be a terrible film, with a horrible reason d'être: to make money off someone else's creativity. Can you imagine someone making the sequel to 'Taxi Driver' without Scorsese and De Niro's consents? Insanity! I'm speaking up for Harmony and his original vision and for any creative person who cares about preserving artistic integrity."
Well, it's safe to say that judging by Franco's remarks neither he nor any other original cast members will take part in the new movie as production company Wild Bunch had previously hoped for.
Wild Bunch's Vincent Maraval recently told Screen Daily, "[The movie] is not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original."
Though it's clear now that no old cast members will be part of the new film, will you still be watching?
