Arsenal was embarrassed on Saturday by the score of 5-1 against Liverpool.

Sadly the team could not sum up the performance as a poor 90-minute effort; quite the opposite. Arsenal lost the game in the opening 20 minutes of the match as it fell behind 4-0.

"It was a very poor day. We were poor defensively, offensively," Wenger said in an interview with BT Sport. "Only our fans were good for 90 minutes. All the rest, we were poor. Liverpool played very well, so congratulations to them. But it was a poor performance on a day when we couldn't afford it.

"Of course it raises some questions today because we were caught many times and were naive. Defensively we need to be more stable. Today we were too open. From the front to the back we were not at the level we are used to."

Goaltender Wojciech Szczesny was thoroughly embarrassed by the effort, posting some explicit comments on his Facebook page.

"That was f***ing embarrassing. Apologies to anyone who sat through 90mins of that game," he wrote.

Wenger noted that the team must not dwell on the defeat -- their worst of the season -- for too long. The team hosts Manchester United on Wednesday in what will be a major test.

"What is important is that we respond to that result -- and especially respond with a different performance because our performance overall was poor," Wenger stated. "On the concentration level, on pace, on defensive stability, it was very poor, and we always looked vulnerable. If you concede two early goals from set-pieces, you are in a position where you always have to come out.

"I just think the whole team have failed to turn up with the right performance. We know that you need to be better focused at this kind of level. Overall, our performance was just not good enough and I include myself in that."

Arsenal sits second in the Premier League with 55 points and now trails Chelsea by one point.
