Jennifer Lawrence Leaves X-Men Return Hanging; Wants to Appear in MCU Film
After the three-picture contract expired, Jennifer Lawrence still has not made up her mind if she will be coming back for seconds (or in this case, fourth). She has, however, showed interest in a cameo role alongside Star-Lord and the rest of the Guardians.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Lawrence (who plays Raven/ Mystique in the X-Men films) was talking with James McAvoy (Charles Xavier/ Professor X) and Michael Fassbender (Erik Lehnsherr/ Magneto) regarding their return to the X-Men franchise. From the way the conversation went earlier this year, it seems that if one does not come back, none of them will. McAvoy and Fassbender, along with Nicholas Hoult (Hank McCoy/ Beast), had their deals with Fox end the same time as hers. Their stand on returning may cause problems with the franchise, who is reportedly hitting another 'reset' button for the mutant team.
On the other hand, in an interview with MTV promoting the movie Passengers, which Lawrence co-stars with Chris Pratt, she admits on wanting to play as her X-Men character in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. While this seems promising to fans, it would take more than just a wish for this to happen. The movie is currently in its post-production stage, and adding the changeling mutant, if the request pulls through, would require several reshoots.
The biggest roadblock would be the film rights, as Fox owns the rights to X-Men characters, including Mystique. Guardians of the Galaxy, which is part of the MCU, is currently held by Disney. Cinema Blend makes a good point in stating that this would have been impossible in the past, but due to Sony and Disney working together to bring a new incarnation of Spider-Man to the big screen, this may not seem impossible at all.
Lawrence and Pratt star in the movie Passengers, where they wake up 90 years too early on board a space ship bound for another planet. Directed by Morten Tyldum, the movie is set to release on December 21 2016.
