Sony’s Playstation VR Takes Lion’s Share of the VR Market
The Virtual Reality market is starting to become a reality. Sony, one of the world's tech giants, is gaining the upper hand, leading against HTC and Oculus in this blooming market.
The Playstation VR, the company's entry to the VR market, is making its impact with an estimated 800,000 units shipped before the year ends. This is definitely more than the estimated 500,000 units for the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift's 400,000 estimated units, according to PC World.
Its current retail price of $399 could be a big selling point for the device, as its competitors cost a lot more than the $599 Oculus Rift, or the HTC Vive's $799.
Specs-wise, the PS VR takes advantage of the Playstation 4's GPU (Graphics Processing Unit), which is impressive in itself, to flesh out the virtual reality the device offers. The 920xRGBx1080 OLED display can run 1080p games at 90Hz or 120Hz, depending on the game. It also has a very impressive 18ms response rate, which is faster than the highest acceptable latency by 0.002ms.
Sony has also announced that an additional 50 titles will be released for the device by the end of the year. And as University Herald reports, some may be first-party titles.
Additional players are expected to join the VR race in the coming year, including big names like Dell, Asus, Lenovo and HP, though it is possible that they will adapt the Windows Holographic format. Windows' entry, the Microsoft HoloLens, has a commanding price of $3000 in the market.
Many Chinese manufacturers will also be jumping in on the VR bandwagon. Most of them may offer the product at a much lower price, with 3Glasses working on their version of the HoloLens, but on a $499 price point.
The virtual reality technology is something that has been worked on for decades. In video games, Nintendo's Virtual Boy was one of the first to venture on this project, though unfortunately ended up with negative results.
