'How I Met Your Mother' spin-off under development; Rumors of new spin-off doomed to fail are rife
Another potential spinoff of "How I Met Your Mother" is currently under development. Titled How I Met Your Father, the new series will be written by This Is Us writers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger.
As GameSpot stated, when "How I Met Your Mother" ended in 2014, a trial pilot of a spin-off series, named "How I Met Your Dad", was released. It starred Greta Gerwig in the lead role and actress Meg Ryan as the narrator.
Sadly, the pilot was not well received that the spin-off series never took off. Despite the failure of the first one, a second spinoff is currently being planned. Similar to the 2014 spin off idea, "How I Met Your Father" will also offer a female's perspective of how she met the dad of her children.
Hollywood Reporter announces that HIMYF will witness original series creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas acting as executive producers along with writers Berger and Aptaker. However, Bays and Thomas will not be directly involved in the project due to difference in opinions with its competitor, Sony Television.
Fans are having mixed feelings regarding the spin off series. Although HIMYM was extremely popular and loved by audience, the first spin-off attempt failed to harness the similar audience response.
This did put a big question on the fate of a second attempt to a spin off. Many believe that it is already doomed to fail.
According to Digital Spy, there are high chances that everything about the spin off will get compared to the original series a lot. This will lead to viewers' constantly missing Neil Patrick Harris's Barney Stinson and other old cast members, resulting in a loss of interest in the spin off.
The site gave the example of Friends spin-off Joey which also did not see the success of its original. Guess only time will tell what fate has stored for "How I Met Your Father".
