NBA Playoffs 2014 Bracket, Standings & Schedule: San Antonio Spurs Take 2-0 Series; Can The Oklahoma City Thunder Rebound?
The San Antonio Spurs dominated the Oklahoma City Thunder for the second straight game by a score of 112-77, to take a 2-0 series lead.
Once again, the Spurs owned the paint down low without Serge Ibaka's presence. In Game 1, the Spurs scored 66 points in the paint and in their latest beat down, they scored 54 points in the paint. Thunder Head Coach Scott Brooks decided to once again go small attempting to beat the Spurs with speed and athleticism. However, that plan backfired, again. Center Kendrick Perkins only played 15 minutes.
The Spurs successfully made nine three-point shots, while the Thunder only made two.
The fourth and final quarter was barely even watchable as the both teams played their backups for most of the period. This benefits the Spurs "big three" of Manu Ginóbili, Tim Duncan and Tony Parker a lot because of their age. It was also a good time for other players such as Marco Belinelli, Boris Diaw, and Danny Green to get more practice. Green made seven three-point shots in Game 2.
History, however, is on the Thunder's side despite being down 0-2. In the 2012 Western Conference Finals, the Spurs took a 2-0 series lead over the Thunder and it looked as if the Spurs were heading back to the NBA Finals. The Thunder rallied to win the next four consecutive games to win the series 4-2. Although that Thunder team did come back, there were two big differences. One, that team had James Harden who was on fire from the perimeter and scored at will off the bench. Two, that team also had Serge Ibaka who provided defense and rebounds. Both of these teams remember that series.
Many have been skeptical if Ibaka is really going to miss the entire series as initially reported. Ibaka recently posted on his blog that he is still expected to be out for the entire postseason. The playoffs aren't scheduled to finish until mid June, so Ibaka is easily confirming he is out for this series.
It's unlikely that the Thunder will come back because of their lack of defense, no Ibaka, and refusal to go big. The biggest disparity between the two teams is coaching. The Spurs can't give in and act as if the series is over. They still have to travel to Oklahoma City for games three and four in front of one of the loudest crowds in the NBA.
Game 3 begins Sunday night, May 25, at 8:30 p.m. EDT on TNT.
