The recently concluded UFC 209 never really brought the lightweight division into focus. As long as Conor McGregor is sitting on top of the said weight class, uncertainty will always be there, but at the very least, fans were expecting some clarity in terms of the general state of the 155-pound division last weekend.

A lightweight title fight between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov had fans hyped and excited ahead of UFC 209. According to ESPN.com, not only was it going to be an amazing and spectacular fight, the winner of the contest would then be perfectly set up to call McGregor out.

But unfortunately, Nurmagomedov was hospitalized while he was cutting weight, which eventually resulted in the cancellation of their fight. So instead, Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson was canceled for the third time as Nate Diaz, who is currently turning down any potential fight except a Conor McGregor trilogy, chilled in floor seats.

Many fans are already thinking that the UFC's lightweight division is in shambles, but a lot of analysts are predicting on just how-how the dust will eventually settle on the said weight class. When Conor McGregor does return to the Octagon, he will be fighting Nate Diaz

After the cancellation of Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson fight, it's pretty clear that the UFC would now need a blockbuster fight to compensate for the canceled fight. Though McGregor sells fine on his own, against anyone, him fighting Nate Diaz will raise that already high bar even further.

However, is this the fight that should most likely happen? Some analysts are also thinking that it would probably not be the case. According to MMA Mania, McGregor currently holds the official lightweight belt, and the most deserving one to challenge him for it at this particular moment is, unquestionably, Ferguson, and to keep Ferguson from that opportunity is going to be unfair.

Although McGregor has already stated, previously, that he intends to fight Diaz again. And although a potential boxing match against Floyd Mayweather has been swirling in the headlines, it is more likely that McGregor's next fight will be in the octagon and not a boxing ring.
