Ann B. Davis, one of America's favorite TV sitcom maids, died Monday morning at the age of 88.

Davis was best known for her iconic role as Alice Nelson on the hit TV series "The Brady Bunch," which aired from 1969 to 1974.

E! News reports that the actress fell and hit her head at her home on Sunday. As a result, she suffered from a subdural hematoma and never regained consciousness. She died at a hospital in San Antonio, Texas, according to CNN.

Davis' character was known for being a devoted housekeeper, wearing a trademark light blue maid uniform and her witty one-liners.

Davis described how she created the character during a 2004 interview with the Archive of American Television.

"I made up a background story. I did have a twin sister, so I used that as a basis ... I cared very much about this family. It was my family. It was as close to my family as Alice would ever get. I would have died for any single one of them at any point," she said. "You know, they wrote me such gorgeous things to do, as the intermediary between the kids and the adults, and between the boys and the girls. And they gave me funny things to do."

Before starring on the "Brady Bunch," Davis won two Emmy awards for her role as Schultzy on "The Bob Cummings Show" in 1958 and 1959. She was also honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.

Florence Henderson, the actress who played Carol Brady on the hit sitcom, wrote a Facebook post in reaction the tragic news.

"I am so shocked and sad to learn that my dear friend and colleague, Ann B. Davis, died today," she wrote. "I spoke with her a couple of months ago and she was doing great!"
