Since its launch, Instagram's main feature was to select filters before posting photos onto the photo-sharing social media platform. However, these filters will now be just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to image editing on the popular app. In its most recent update, version 6.0, Instagram has implemented the first major changes to adding more filters and more photo editing options. There isn't a new set of filters to play with, users of the application are now allowed to edit photos with greater flexibility. Some of the original features were altered in their return to the new version, as was announced by Instagram on its official blog. Version 6.0 is now available in both Google Play and the App Store.

New Tools and How to Use Them

  • The new tools feature Filter Strength (still available on the original filters), Brightness, Contrast, Adjust, Saturation, Highlights, Vignette, Shadows, and Sharpen.
  • Filter Strength controls the intensity of how the filters are applied on the photo as adjusted by a slider.
  • Warmth will shift the photo's color from cooler blue hues to warmer orange tones. Sharpen will make the image look more crisp and clear.
  • Focus on brighter parts can be adjusted using the Highlights feature.
  • Brightness, of course, will adjust how dark or bright the photo will be, while the Vignette option will add darker edges, allowing the photo to be more focused on the center.
  • Original features will also still be present in the app, but many have undergone a redesign or two.
  • All in all, Instagram announced 10 new editing tools for both Android and iOS users.

While the update is already available for download online, devices running on Windows will have to wait to enjoy Instagram's new features. Hopefully, though, it will not take too long. This upgrade does a lot to help the leading photo-sharing program to maintain its competitiveness.
