How Content Creators are Adapting to the Evolution of Internet Browsing
The internet has been one of the most revolutionary forces of change in the global financial markets. It has brought continents closer to each other and has helped to connect the world in ways no one could have imagined a few decades ago.
The top 5 largest companies in the world by market capitalization are internet-based while traditional technology giants have also adapted their operations to capitalize on the growth of online marketplaces. In fact, you will hardly come across a business that has no online presence these days.
As such, to continue to drive sales, online advertising has become a crucial cog in the jigsaw. And to facilitate this concept, another industry has come to life in the form of digital content creators. Billions of people browse the internet every day and this is a huge opportunity for advertisers to attract new customers to their brands. Therefore, they use various advertising networks like Google to run ads on publisher websites.
But with increased content filtering, internet censorship, and broadband throttling, internet browsers have become more innovative to get around these obstacles as they seek freedom in their online experience. As such, some have adapted modern techniques used in circumventing internet censorship and content filtering to enjoy more freedom including the use of virtual private networks (VPNs).
Some internet browsers have gone the extra mile of trying to avoid exposure to excessive advertising. Some content creators tend to flood their website with several ads to try to maximize the revenue potential and this can be annoying at times. As such, some visitors try to avoid such bombardment of ads by using ad blockers. The increasing use of ad blockers has seen some ad-supported websites post massive declines in revenues with some reporting up to 60% drop in monthly earnings.
To try to combat this type of user behavior, some content creators are switching to subscription-only publishing, which means that to view content published on their websites, visitors are required to be premium subscribers. Others have adopted a hybrid model that utilizes both ads and subscriptions, in which case there are no ads visible to premium subscribers while others prompt users to disable ad-blocking in order to view content on their websites.
To establish a common ground some advertisers choose to work with content creators directly, which means that the publisher places ads as specified by the advertiser for a monthly or weekly fee, rather than relying on Google's algorithm for ad placement.
Advertising networks also reward traffic depending on location. For instance, the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia have higher CPM rates than traffic originating from India and the developing countries. Therefore, the use of VPNs and VPSs can at times work in favor of content creators, if for instance, a visitor from Latin America uses a US-based VPS/VPN, in which case the traffic may be treated as if it originated from the US.
In summary, internet browsing has evolved over the last few years with more technologies now being used to try to bypass various obstacles like internet censorship, content filtering, and broadband throttling. Content creators have been forced to adapt to these trends to maintain profitable businesses.
