Latinos Hope to Make History in Mayoral Election and Vies for Virginia House Seats
Former United States of America President Barack Obama endorsed two Virginia Latinos that could help their campaign and for the Democrats to take control of the commonwealth's House of Delegates. There are some pitched battles this year featuring Latino candidates while everyone is overshadowed in the 2020 elections.
Moreover, in Tucson and Salt Lake City, two Latinas are running for mayor and this would be the first time for both candidates in their respective cities.
According to NBC News , President Obama endorsed Phil Hernandez who served as the Domestic Policy Council to challenge the four-term Republican incumbent Del Rob Bloxom Jr. Aside from the endorsement of Former President Obama, he was also endorsed by former president candidate Joe Biden, former Tallahassee, Florida Mayor Andrew Gillum and the former running mate of Hillary Clinton in 2016 Elections U.S. Senator Tim Kaine.
Behind the endorsements of prominent persons in the U.S., Phil Hernandez expressed his gratitude through his personal Twitter account. He even added that he witnessed the power of persistence, decency and selfless service during the time of President Obama. On a personal note, Hernandez claimed that times like these calls for those virtues.
Moreover, the Latino Victory Fund is raising money for the candidacy of Phil Hernandez. The Latino Victory Fund executive director Mayra Macias told the reporters that Hernandez has raised more money compared to his Republican opponent.
In another separate statement, Macias said that the victory of Hernandez will be a historic in the community because it could be the way that a Latino will be the key for the Democrats to take back Virginia House of Delegates.
In a report from CBS News, the Associated Press claims that Democrats on Tuesday wiped-out the Republicans in the State Capitol. The Democrats are now holding the three branches of government in Virginia for the first time in U.S. political history.
It can be remembered that Vice-President Mike Pence and former Vice-President Joe Biden visited Virginia that received nationwide attention. They gave powerful messages as to how the different parties can deliver services most especially in the suburbs area.
In an official report from Virginia Board of Elections, the voters turn-out was higher compared to the 2015 elections. Hence, this solidified the control of Democrats in the chambers. Meanwhile, the Democratic candidate Shelly Simonds for the house of delegates lost a random two years ago from the Republican David Yancey.
However, Simonds won during their election rematch that ousted the four-term incumbent David Yancey. Their 2017 candidacy was very close that it even led into a recount and court hearings. At the end, fortune speaks that Shelly Simonds won the 2017 elections.
A night before the election, CNN projected that the Democrats will win the more or less 21 seats in the Virginia. The projection resonates during the election day as the Democrats will now take control of the Virginias' Senate House of delegates and Governor's Office for the first time after two decades.
