Eddie Moran Makes History as Reading's First Hispanic Mayor
Another person of Latino origins wins in the mayoral elections in a town in the United States of America. The leadership in the US is becoming more and more diversified over the years through the election of many leaders from diverse cultural backgrounds and origins.
The voices of the voting population of Reading City, Pennsylvania had been concluded to sound the loudest in favor of Eddie Moran.
Eddie Moran had won ever his opponent, Lou Perugini (a Republican candidate). Moran had announced his victory over the elections ninety minutes before the polls ended Tuesday evening. He had won the mayoral race by 5,000 votes.
His victory makes him the first Hispanic mayor of the 5th largest city in the state of Pennsylvania.
"My victory today is bigger than me and every individual in this room. Tonight, we become pioneers, and by standing on the shoulders of others before me, we are setting a new path forward for Latino leadership for decades to come," Eddie Moran stated in front of an audience in the ballroom of the Abraham Lincoln.
Being the first Hispanic leader in Reading, Eddie Moran will be replacing the current mayor of the city, Wally Scott. It was also reported in the news that Moran had won over the preliminary elections conducted in May this year.
Moran promises to the people of Reading that he will provide a "positive change" to the city of Reading and he also emphasizes that it will not be just a "cheap slogan". He was talking about the slogan of the campaign of Wally Scott, "A city of positive change."
The first Hispanic leader in Reading was born on the island of Puerto Rico but he grew up in New York. Later on, he moved to Reading 12 years ago.
He had served as the vice president of the Reading School Board for six years. Currently, he is working as an insurance broker.
He plans on building the City Hall on one part of the Washington St. and the city's school district administration structure on the other side.
"We can't move forward as a city without working hand in hand with the Reading School District I look forward to building a strategic partnership with my soon-to-be former colleagues on the Reading School Board, because the future of our city sits in the classrooms of our schools," said Eddie Moran to the public regarding his plans on improving the facilities of the education system in the city.
Moran's leadership experience in the Reading School Board had equipped him with the expertise in effectively handling a budget worth $300 million. He had also meaningful experience collaborating with other elected officials. He was also privileged to build strong connections with the different offices in the government.
His success in the elections is being presumed to be from a majority of the Latino community in the city. According to the census data of the United States of America, 2/3 of the 90,000 population of Reading City are from Hispanic origins.
The main focus of the leadership of the Eddie Moran will be education and economic growth.
