"Good Morning America" anchor Robin Roberts will be the 2014 recipient of the Walter Cronkite award for her excellence in journalism, reports ABC 15.

Roberts will accept the award given by Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication on Oct. 6 of this year.

"I'm truly humbled to join the list of remarkable journalists who have received the Walter Cronkite Award," said Roberts in a statement. "I'm honored to be selected and look forward to spending time with the students at Arizona State University. I know we're all in great hands with this next generation of journalists."

Roberts will join the long line of innovate Cronkite award recipients that include TV anchors Diane Sawyer, Brian Williams and Tom Brokaw; newspaper journalists Ben Bradlee, Helen Thomas and Bob Woodward; and media executives Katharine Graham, Al Neuharth and Bill Paley, KPHO reports.

Before his death in 2009, Walter Cronkite presented the awards. The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication was named in honor of Cronkite in 1984.

"Robin Roberts' outstanding contributions to our profession, and the great personal courage she has demonstrated, make her the perfect recipient for this year's Cronkite Award," said Cronkite School Dean Christopher Callahan. "We are excited for our students, alumni, supporters and friends to hear her inspirational story and celebrate her career."

Robin Roberts has over 20 years of experience in broadcast journalism. She has conducted interviews with powerful figures that include President Barack Obama, Academy-award winning actor Sydney Poitier, and basketball great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Roberts is also known for her strength and courage with battling cancer while still working for ABC and also for struggling with a rare bone marrow disorder.

Her tenacity and determination to beat the odds and prevail, have earned her a slew of awards from groups including he Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Congressional Families Cancer Prevention Program, as well as ESPN's Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYS and the prestigious 2013 Peabody Award for "Robin's Journey."
