Female Independent Candidate Alexandra Lúgaro to Run as Governor of Puerto Rico
Attorney Alexandra Lúgaro, 38 years old, had given an announcement during her speech at the Plazuela La Rogativa in Old San Juan on Tuesday. She had included in her speech that she will be joining the race as an independent candidate for governor in the 2020 elections in the country.
According to Attorney Alexandra Lúgaro, she was encouraged to run again for governor after the immense protests during summer that resulted in the former Governor Ricardo Rosselló to leave his office as the governor of Puerto Rico.
"The same thing we did in the summer we have to replicate it day by day. We have to unite and transform outrage into action. In these moments, the historical situation, the responsibility I have and the incredible love that I feel for my country have put me here, aspiring as a candidate for governor," said the attorney to a massive crowd reported by El Nuevo Día.
As we reported way back in 2016, when Attorney Alexandra Lúgaro had filed her candidacy to run for governor, she became the first-ever female independent candidate is the entire history of Puerto Rico.
Being an underdog, she was surprised many when she attained a total of 175,831 votes which had placed her 3rd in the 2016 governor elections in Puerto Rico. She got 11.13% of the total voting population in Puerto Rico.
Currently, Lúgaro will be campaigning under the Victoria Citizen Movement (MVC).
If she wins the elections, she will be privileged to stay in the La Fortaleza or the governor's mansion.
During Lúgaro's speech, she had shared some of the important points of her plans if ever she wins the 2020 election in Puerto Rico. She shared that, once seated as governor of Puerto Rico; she will take back the controversial funding to the fiscal control board, audit the debt of Puerto Rico, and create "coherent" projects geared towards economic development. She had also expressed her plans for the education sector and universal health care. She also stressed the topic regarding immigrants and providing opportunities in Puerto Rico to entice them to return.
"They have paid the highest price for this crisis, which is not being able to live in this beautiful place. If something unites us, it is precisely to make Puerto Rico become that space where you [the diaspora] can return," said Attorney Alexandra Lúgaro.
Attorney Alexandra Lúgaro is not the only candidate for governor in Puerto Rico who is creating significant noise in the election. Some of her other contenders are Pedro Pierluisi ( from the New Progressive Party who served as the resident commissioner of Puerto Rico in the United States Congress), Carmen Yulín Cruz (from the Popular Democratic Party and the current mayor of San Juan), Charlie Delgado, Juan Zaragoza, and Eduardo Bhatia.
"We have to reach a point where we understand that the route to the country that we deserve is a route where we have to agree as people who are [pro-statehood, pro-independence, pro-commonwealth and] people who have no status preference. That feat that began in the summer we have to complete it in November 2020," said Attorney Alexandra Lúgaro.
