Google Unveils New Tablet With Project Tango Software, 3D Mapping Capabilities
Google unveiled a tablet on Thursday that is equipped with its latest Project Tango software, which provides realistic 3D mapping and sensing capabilities for mobile devices.
According to CNet, Google is expected to have the device available to software developers in late June. Project Tango, which was launched in February, was initially developed on a smartphone prototype.
"You can use the Project Tango Tablet Development Kit to make applications that track full 3-dimensional motion and capture surfaces in the environment," Google said in a press release for the tablet.
The tablet, which stands at 7-inches tall and costs $1,024, features the Project Tango Tablet Development Kit that allows developers to build applications and will be available at the company's annual Google I/O conference in San Francisco later this month. There attendees would have the first shot at buying the new tablet.
Nvidia, a chipmaker, helped Google to build tablet's hardware. The new Google tablet will also include the company's new TegraK1 mobile processor, several sensors and a motion-tracking camera with 128 gigabytes of storage, CNet reported.
After Google bought Motorola Mobility back in 2012 for $12.5 billion, its skunkworks division, Advanced Technology and Projects group, have worked to bring Project Tango to life. Lenovo, a Chinese PC manufacturer, is expected to acquire Motorola's handset business from Google.
Google said it developed Project Tango to give mobile devices a "human-scale understanding of space and motion."
According to CNet, other companies such as Apple and Facebook have been developing and acquiring 3D technology in the last year. Apple bought PrimeSense, a 3D sensor company, last November while the social network giant purchased the virtual reality goggle maker Oculus for $2 billion two months ago.
In related new, CNet also reported Thursday that Chinese website Mydrivers leaked a photo of Google's other rumored tablet, the Nexus 8. Rumors surrounding the Nexus 8 have claimed it will run Android 4.5, come with 3GB of RAM and be powered by Qualcomm's 64-bit ARM processor.
