The undocumented immigrant community in New York is given the privilege by the government of the state of New York to apply to get their driver's license. The law was being called the "Green Light Law" had started to take effect on Monday.

The Green Light Law was signed to law by Governor Andrew Cuomo in June this year. The law aims to broaden the types of identification forms allowed to be presented for the application of driver's licenses in the state of New York. This expansion allows Identification forms of foreign origin such as passports and driver's licenses.

Aside from the purpose of federal identification, the Green Light Law requires the commissioner and any employee of his office to keep the information confidential regarding the identification of those applying for a license. They are also required by the law to restrict the access of government enforcement agencies (and their agents) that oversee the proper implementation of the immigration policies to the records containing the information of those who applied for a driver's license. This law can only be waived if there is a licit court order or lawful warrant.

Upon the start of the law's execution, many had expressed their support for the newly established law and expressed that the undocumented immigrants in the country can then make a living in the state of New York with less fear of being deported.

According to a statement by Gustavo Rivera in the Senate Floor of New York in June, being a New Yorker he expressed his duty to protect his co-New Yorkers. He said that everyone who is residing in the state is all New Yorkers regardless of being documented or not.

The Green Light Law passed the trials after it was challenged by the Clerk of Rensselaer County and had later ended by the judge's rejection of his defense last Friday.

According to Atty. Letitia James, the Green Light Law is licit and enforceable. She said that two different courts had already discredited the claims placed by 2 county clerks.

James also said that upon the implementation of the law, the roads of New York will become safer. She also said that the law will also positively affect the economy. It will also let immigrants apply for a legal driver's license in the state regardless of their migration status.

According to a social media post by Frank Merola, a Rensselaer County Clerk, he was disappointed for the passing of the Green Light Law and calls it a setback. Merola had reported undocumented immigrants who were applying for a driver's license to the Department of Motor Vehicle of the state of New York for their insufficiency of training. He even said that they should not accept foreign documentation.

According to Merola, there are only 3 of the seventeen employees of the Rensselear County-Department of Motor Vehicles who were trained to process such types of documentation. He will be referring to undocumented immigrants who are applying for a driver's license to the office of the state until everything is okay and up to par.
