Religion Facts, List & Comparison: Islam is Second-Most Practiced Religion in the US
More than three-quarters of American citizens identify themselves as belonging to the Christian faith with the majority identified as Protestants, according to The Washington Post.
More than half of Americans consider themselves to be Protestant, 23 percent said they're Catholic and roughly 2 percent are Mormon. Behind Christianity, Buddhism, Islam and Judaism make up more or so of the rest of religious believers in the nation.
The Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies found that in the Western half of the nation, including Alaska and Hawaii, most non-Christians are Buddhists, while 20 states, mostly found in the Midwest and South, have higher concentrations of Muslims. As for Judaism, many are found in 15 states, mostly in the Northeast region of the U.S.
Minnesota, Missouri and Tennessee had a large population of people following Judaism.
However, in states such as Arizona and Delaware, its non-Christian citizens are found to be Hindus while South Carolina's second most practiced religion is in the Baha'i faith.
The data provided by the statisticians group bases its findings on its 10-year U.S. Religion Census with the current results being from 2010.
When looking at non-Christian religious groups, adherents to any religious group, or people that regularly attend religious services, were found to comprise more than half of the population in 28 states, The Post reported.
The state with the highest rate of adherents was found in Utah with 79 percent of the population. Alabama, Louisiana, and North Dakota were right behind Utah, while Alaska, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont and Washington ranked near the bottom with Maine being the lowest.
When looking at the Christian religion, Catholics had the highest rate of adherents with 1,231 counties while Southern Baptists were not far behind with 1,217 counties. Catholicism had its stronghold in the Northeast and Southwest regions of the nation and Southern Baptists were found -- to no surprise -- primarily in the Southern states.
The United Methodist Church came in third dominating 244 counties, which were found throughout the Midwest and Eastern states of the nation.
