Valentine's Day is a worldwide holiday. However, different countries celebrate it uniquely. The United States of America and other European countries commonly view the holiday as a romantic event. However, in some Hispanic and Latin cultures, it is viewed a little differently.

The Different Names of Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is named differently in various Hispanic and Latin nations.

In Puerto Rico and Mexico, they call Valentine's Day as 'El Día de San Valentin.' This term is translated in English as 'the Day of Saint Valentine.'

Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, and Puerto Rico also calls the holiday as 'El Día de San Valentin.' This translates to 'the Day of Love and Friendship.' It is a day to express one's love for their family and friends, including their romantic partners.

Some South American nations such as Chile and Argentina, Valentine's Day is called 'Día de Los Enamorados.' This translates to 'Day of the Lovers.'

In Guatemala, some locals refer to this holiday as 'Día del Cariño.' This translates to English as 'Day of Affection.'

Exciting Valentine's Day Traditions

There is a collection of ways on how different Latino and Hispanic countries celebrate Valentine's Day.

In Peru, locals gift each other with orchids. Orchids are abundantly grown in the many regions of Latin America. Also, it is a symbol of deep love. This makes the plant a perfect gift to express your affection to the person you deeply love. Instead of the traditional roses for Valentine's Day, why not give your Peruvian lover a bouquet of orchids instead.

In Latin American countries and Spain, roses and lilies are the other common types of flowers gifted in celebration of Valentine's Day. Also, they are the two most romantic flowers gifted by people from the United States.

In El Salvador and the Dominican Republic, on Valentine's Day, Children play a game called 'Angelito' in celebration of the holiday. It is similar to the game 'Secret Santa.' Angelito is played by children by randomly selecting names and giving a gift to the selected friend. The other name of the game is 'Amigo Secreto' which means 'secret friend' in English.

An article from the Telefora Blog stated that Guatemalans celebrate El Día del Cariño by participating in a big senior citizen's parade. The event is celebrated in the capital city of the country. Participants in the parade wore colorful costumes and masks.

Multiple Valentine's Days in a Year

Aside from the many names given to Valentine's Day by Latin and Hispanic cultures, it is also celebrated on different dates throughout the year.

In Catalonia, Spain, locals celebrate 'Diada de Sant Jordi' or 'St. George's Day' or 'the Day of Lovers' every April 23. This is celebrated to honor St. Geroge, Catalonia's patron saint. Its celebration includes giving flowers and books as gifts to express their love for loved ones.

In Columbia, locals celebrate the holiday on September 20. They often give gifts as secret admirers.

In Bolivia, it celebrates Valentine's Day a day later. Some other countries celebrate the holiday in June and October.
