Why Diego Luna Finally Signed onto "Narcos: Mexico"
Diego Luna explains the importance of storytelling and why he always considered Mexico City as his home according to a published article in We Are Mitu.
A previous report from Latin Post revealed that it took months of conversation before Diego Luna signed into playing the role of Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo in the new season of "Narcos: Mexico." He only signed to play the character when he found out that the new season of Netflix's most compelling documentary series does not intend to talk about the character so much as the system that leads the characters to be involved in the drug cartel.
Luna also revealed that he did not talk to Gallardo to help him play his character. Even though there were interviews given to him about Gallardo, Luna instead chose to read what people think about Gallardo. He believed that when you ask people about themselves, they will only tell you the half-truth. Moreover, in playing his role he said: "The good thing for me in playing this role is this man was a very discreet person, he understood the power of discretion."
The actor also said that it is important for him to do research about Gallardo and look for common answers. He found out that what made Gallardo the apex of Mexican Cartel during his time was his intelligence, precision, and his strategic thinking.
Meanwhile, he also said that the new season of "Narcos" explained that even those who are committing corrupt acts are victims. Luna said: "Some of the characters that take action are victims of the whole system."
However, even though during the first season of "Narcos" on Netflix which gained much attention from the viewers, still it cannot be avoided that the documentary film was criticized because it only shows the bad side of Mexico. For Luna, this is something that should be talked about so that everyone can move on.
Besides, Luna also said that this part of storytelling about Mexico is very important because this gives everyone a fuller picture of the country. He added that seeing the darkest side of a country that is marked by political and judicial corruption is very vital.
Luna said: "In this case, the story is very complex, it's talking about a corrupt system that allows these stories to happen. We don't tell stories like that-we simply everything. With this, I had a chance to understand that complexity. The journey of this character is a presentable journey. Power has a downside, and he gets there and he thinks he's indispensable and clearly he is not."
In real life, aside from a well-known Mexican actor, Luna is also a well-known vocal activist who constantly work to put the talents and arts of Mexico in the international stage through his work. He always believed that Mexico has a culture waiting to be explored.
Diego Luna also shared that he always considered Mexico as his home. He said: "The beauty of Mexico is that there are many Mexicos-it's a very diverse country. You have the Pacific Coast that is beautiful and vibrant and really cool. By far my favorite beach spots in Mexico are in Oaxaca and all the region of Baja California. You also have the desert and jungle and Veracruz and you have all the Caribbean coast and the city is to be a place I can't really escape. Home is Mexico City, and it will always be where most of my love stories are and where I belong."
