The Vatican Sends Two Sex Crimes Investigators to Mexico
An article from Airdrie Today, the Vatican is planning to send two of its top experts in investigating sex crimes in Mexico. They will be on a quest to find facts about the issues involved with years of clergy sex abuse and cover-up.
Monsignor Jordi Bertomeu and Archbishop Charles Scicluna had partnered in 2018 to investigate the Church in Chile and its significant number record of pedophile priests protection.
New Mission in Mexico
The new mission to Mexico will take effect from March 20 to March 2, announced by the Vatican and Mexico on Monday. Officials stated that not totally an investigation but an assistance mission to assist the church in Mexico with its fight with Mexico sex crimes.
The Vatican embassy in Mexico City had requested the victims of abuse to converse with the two prelates. The victims will be provided with an email address to schedule a meeting or send their testimony. A phone number will also be given to the victims in case they want to give their testimonies through a phone call. This will offer complete privacy and confidentiality to the information.
Bertomeu and Scicluna will be available to receive the testimonies. They will be there to share their experiences and offer help and direction.
The 2018 Trip to Chile
In 2018, Bertomeu and Scicluna went to Chile. They investigated abuse coverup cases. During that period, they were able to acquire testimonies from at least 60 abuse victims. The testimonies they gathered were enough to fill 2,600 pages of a dossier.
The report was important in assisting Pope Francis to realize that he had misinterpreted the church's issue with sex abuse and coverup. The Argentine Jesuit had repeatedly said their apologies. Additionally, they took measures to attempt to instill additional accountability among bishops.
The Mission in Mexico
Scicluna and Bertomeu will have a conference with bishops in Mexico and other high ranking religious orders in Mexico. Also, they will meet with the survivors of Mexico's sex crimes.
The Mexican bishops conference stated that it had requested for the mission. They revealed that it will provide benefits to children. They are the most vulnerable in Mexico.
A statement by the bishops said that they are sure that it will help them provide better responses to the abuse cases. They aim to search for civil and canonical justice for the victims. They aim to go by the 'zero tolerance' principles. They want to emphasize that there is no exemption for the church with such crimes.
The mission comes after the Mexican church is being asked to make a count of the years of sex abuse and coverup cases. Recently, it had confessed to Mexico sex crimes and investigations of 271 priests in the past decade.
Mexico is the second-biggest Catholic nation after Brazil. The knowledge of Vatican officials regarding its total numbers of sexual abuse cases is only a fraction of the actual and true number. The Mexican church is powerful. Many of the sexual abuse and coverup victims had been ordered to keep quiet.
