Mexico Takes Top Spot as US Foreign Trade Partner in January 2020
The total US Mexico trade, including exports and imports of Mexico with the United States of America, had totaled to $49,165 billion in January 2020 was reported by the United States Commerce Department, says an article from Mexicanist.
Despite this amount being 0.9 percent lower compared to the results in January 2019, it was sufficient to allow Mexico to retain its standing as the top trading partner of the United States.
The trade in the first month of the year had led to a similar result witnessed by both countries in 2016.
Mexican Exports to the United States
The US Mexico exports had totaled to $28.331 billion. This represents an increase of 2.3% of the yearly rate.
In January, the shipments originating from Mexico to the United States was at its peak.
Mexican Imports to the United States
The imports of goods originating from Mexico to the United Stated had amounted to $20.834 billion. This total amount accounts for a reduction of 4.9% of its annual imports to the US.
The United States' Total Foreign Trade
In the United States' total foreign trade, the Mexican market represents 15. 10%. This is the highest rate compared to the other nations doing trade with the US. Canada makes 14.70% of the total foreign trade of the US while China gets 12.40% and Japan 4.90%. Also, Germany takes 4.50% of the total US foreign trade, while South Korea gets 3.50% of that total, the United Kingdom 3.2%, India 2.4%, Taiwan 2.3%, and Vietnam 2.1%.
Mexico as the Number 1 Trading Partner of the United States
In 2019, the year closed with Mexico as the primary trading partner of the United States of America. The Latin American nation had surpassed China and Canada as the top trading partner of the US. Mexico, China, and Canada are the top three global US traders. In total, they make up to 43% of the total US foreign trade.
In January 2019, Mexico was reported as the main trading partner of the United States. The seen cause of this result was the increasing trade war between the administration of President Donald Trump and China.
2019 was a historic year for the US Mexico trade. An amount of $358.126 billion was reported as the total US-Mexico trade. This meant a yearly growth of 3.5%.

Mexico, Canada, and Chine to US Trade in 2019

China was the top trading partner of the United States in 2018, says an article from Quartz. However, the US-China trade wars had led China to decline from the top position.
The trade relationship of Canada with the US had remained flat in 2019 despite the increase in US global trade.
Based on the US Census, in the first half of 2019, Mexico and the United States had traded goods amounting to $309 billion. It was above 15% of the total US trade relations.
