New Evidence Suggests Younger Generations Are More Susceptible to COVID-19
New evidence from Europe and the U.S. suggests that the younger generation is more susceptible to COVID-19 based on data gathered in a recent study.
People around the world think that only those who are elderly and those who have pre-existing medical conditions are prone to be infected by COVID-19. However, new evidence suggests that young generations are not as impermeable as everyone thought.
Young generations or those who age from 20 to 44 years old should not be confident enough that they are steps away to be infected by the virus. There are evidences that will prove that they are susceptible to be infected by the virus.
According to the data gathered by Statista, 24.7 percent or almost a quarter of the nearly 28,000 COVID-19 patients in Italy aged 19-50 years old while based on the data of Center for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States revealed that between 15 to 20 percent of COVID-19 patients aged 20 to 44.
The data shows that millennials are also prone to be infected by the virus. There are many factors considered why they became one of the most vulnerable groups to be infected by COVID-19.
Deborah Birx, White House coordinator against COVID-19, said that "It may have been that the millennial generation, our largest generation, our future generation that will carry us through for the next multiple decades, here may be a disproportional number of infections among that group."
She said this following the release of the data of infected persons who are tested positive for COVID-19. She was also alarmed because around 4 percent of those who aged 20 to 44 years old who are confirmed positive for the virus ended up in the hospitals while it was also reported that few of them died.
In a tweet post by one of the infected American millennials Clement Chow, who is an assistant professor at University of Utah, he wrote "I'm young and not high risk, yet I am in the ICU with a very severe case," he also added that there are still many things that everyone does not know about the virus.
According to his previous tweets that he experienced fever in the past few days and then a bad cough that turned out to be a respiratory failure and COVID-19. He was immediately put into the ICU because he needs a high-flow of oxygen.
He was the only one admitted when he was rushed to the hospital. Based on his tweet, there are many of them right now at the ICU battling for their lives.
One of the factors seen why patients who belong to the millennial generation started to climb it's because of their behavior. It can be recounted that many college students went to the beach in Florida despite the warnings from Pres. Trump and CDC.
This is the reason why pres. Trump reiterated on Wednesday urging the younger generations to stop their reckless behavior such as partying, partying, going to the beach, and hanging out at bars while the virus is still around.
Head of the National Institute on Allergy and Infectious Diseases Anthony Fauci urged the young people in the United States to embrace the effort of the government and protect themselves from the deadly virus. Fauci said: "No one is invulnerable, but even if you are doing very well, you have to be a very important part of our national effort to contain the outbreak.
You are not a passive person in this. You are an important part of the active plan to contain this epidemic. We really do need you. This isn't something that can be successful without you."
There is a need that young generations in the United States should heed to the call of the government to avoid mass gatherings, practice social distancing, and most of all to observe proper hygiene like handwashing using water and soap.
