On March 31, exactly at midnight, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are officially transitioning from their roles in the royal family. The couple's decision to give up their royal life is said to be an unprecedented one and as part of the agreement which the royal family has worked out is that they will go through a 12-month review period.

There are not many specific details shared by the family, on exactly what the review means. However, some factors have become evident and they could give meaning to it.

The Sussex Duke and Duchess, on their website, explained that they have agreed within the royal family, that beginning of their respective roles is taking effect in Spring this year and undergoing "a 12-month review."

This means that the year-long probationary stage appears to have left the door open for both the sides of the Sussexes, as well as the remaining senior royals, the Queen, Prince William, and Prince Charles, to make some adjustments to the agreement.

What Lies Ahead

It remains unclear what the working lives of Harry and Megan will look like ahead and exactly how to earn their private income. Specifically, this 12-month review is a way to reassess in one year and see which things work and which ones don't.

Theoretically, should the couple choose to go back to their senior royal life that seems possible, and could happen after this one-year review.

Despite the agreement, the Sussexes hinted, too, that they were not completely happy with the manner the negotiation within the royal family had unfolded. More so, part of their website referred to the 12-month review "as one of the unsolicited restraints." They have said too, that, "As there is standard for the other titled Royal Family members to search for employment outside the institution, for Harry and Meghan, this year-long review "has been put in place."

Allowing for an Additional Discussion on Prince Harry's Military Titles

It's public knowledge that the Sussexes were disappointed when Harry got mandated to give up his honorary titles in the military, in dialogues about their roles in the future. Besides, this 12-month review gives way to the revisiting of the decision for next spring as such positions will remain unfilled.

According to the Sussexes' website, during the one year of this review, the official appointments of the Duke in the military won't be used since they are "in the gift of the Sovereign." The same website also added, there would be no new appointments made for the roles to be filled before the completion of the new arrangements' 12-month review.

COVID-19 Could Bring Some Changes to Things

Undeniably, the world looks quite different today, compared to how it looked in January when the couple initially said how they intended to step back from their senior royal life. With this, it is said to have been quite foolish to think that the worldwide COVID-19 won't be affecting their plans in the future. Given that, the two are now about to step back from their senior positions in this time of the so-called incredible hesitation, the one-year review may take on higher essentiality.
