Floyd Mayweather vs. Miguel Cotto Fight: Bob Arum, Freddie Roach Want Rematch
Freddie Roach and Bob Arum want a rematch between Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather, but both of them believe that the fight is highly unlikely to happen.
In an interview with BoxingScene, Roach said that a rematch with Mayweather is a very intriguing option, but he is convinced that the reigning pound-for-pound king will come up with excuses similar to what he is doing in talks about a possible super fight against Manny Pacquiao.
"He'll come up with some excuses," said Roach, who is Pacquiao's long-time trainer.
The Hall of Fame trainer said that Mayweather will not fight Cotto, especially after the Puerto Rican scored a dominating win over Sergio Martinez on Saturday to capture the WBC middleweight title.
Roach also said that Mayweather knows that age is finally catching up with him based on his performance in his recent match against Marcos Maidana last month.
"All you got to do with him [Mayweather] is just get in shape and just beat him to it all night," Roach said. "I think his legs are gone. He says he fights, he doesn't move anymore because he wants to please the fans. I think that's bullshit. I think he just can't. I think he's shot. I think he won't fight any of my guys."
Arum also thinks that Cotto deserves a shot at Mayweather after his masterful win against Martinez.
But when asked about the proposed Mayweather-Cotto rematch, Arum said that Mayweather will not face the newly crowned lineal middleweight champion.
"You got an AK?" Arum said in jest. "I'll hold it up to Floyd and say, 'Will you fight Cotto again?' Are you crazy? He's afraid to fight Manny. You think he'd fight Cotto?"
Arum said that Roach has done a wonderful job in reviving Cotto's career and that he strongly believes that Mayweather won't have a chance against Roach's Cotto.
"If Cotto, with Freddie Roach, fought Mayweather again it would be no contest," Arum said. "Mayweather wouldn't have a chance."
