Wrestlers are attempting to take down SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, with face masks.

Due to the widespread cancellations of fight organizations events, the COVID-19 pandemic had not let the combat sports industry with any challenges.

However, Mexican wrestlers have found a one-of-a-kind method to both stay occupied and fight COVID-19 during these trying times for the world. These people have been sewing face masks with Lucha Libre-inspired designs, according to a recent article.

Colorful Mask Inspired By Mexican Wrestling

One of the Mexican wrestlers named El Hijo del Soberano, who lost his combat gig due to the COVID-19 lockdown order, was inspired to sew Lucha Libre-inspired face masks after his wife ask him to make face masks with her.

MacGyvered used some of the excess fabrics used for his wrestling suit for making face masks.

Currently, colorful face masks inspired by much-acclaimed luchadors, are being shown by COVID-19-conscious wrestling fans all over Mexico.

Not a Gimmick

A luchador-themed face mask may appear like a gimmick. However, the materials used to make them are extra-strong due to its double-stitch structure and fabric enforcement.

According to the retired wrestler named IsaÍas Huerta, he had shifted his focus on making face-masks after his wrestler costume shop was ordered to temporarily close due to the state's order involving the closures of non-essential businesses.

He was sewing the costumes of his teammates when he came up with the idea of sewing face masks. His face masks cost more or less 50 pesos or $2 each. He also receives special commissions from the supporters of Mexican wrestling.

Wear Face Masks amid COVID-19 Crisis

The birth of these efforts is at the right timing. Currently, there are more or less 10,000 individuals in Mexico who have confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus. This data have been a source of motivation for different parts of the country to impose a rule of requiring citizens to wear face masks while outside their homes.

Luchadors who have lost their combat gigs due to the COVID-19 pandemic are not the only ones making efforts to help the country prevent the deadly illness from spreading.

Last week, a mother from Utah was reported to have gone viral after selling male genitalia-themed face masks. By selling the masks, she was able to raise $56,000 for charity.

Effectiveness of Wearing Homemade Face Masks

Indeed, homemade masks or sewn face masks are not as effective as medical-grade face masks such as the N95 mask, which has the capability of filtering out a minimum of 95 percent airborne substances. However, researchers who are conducting studies on respiratory illnesses, including SARS, another form of the coronavirus, have discovered that a homemade face mask can help lessen the risk of infection.

It is essential to know that wearing a homemade face mask alone does not ensure protection against the deadly COVID-19. Its rate of effectiveness is increased when combined with fundamental safety measures such as frequent handwashing and observation of social distancing guidelines.
