Arizona Cardinals Rookie Arrested After Allegedly Driving Into Lake Erie
National Football League's Arizona Cardinals rookie wide receiver Jermiah Braswell showed blood-alcohol levels well above the legal limit, when he allegedly drove his car in Lake Erie Saturday evening.
The incident took place in Put-in-Bay in Ohio, near the 200 block of Conlad Road on South Bass Island.
Put-in-Bay Police in Ohio arrested him for driving the vehicle under the influence of alcohol after it received a call from Ottawa Country Sheriff's dispatch regarding the incident, a report from ABC News said.
In a report from FOX News, the police department said it received the call at about 6:30 p.m. that day, pointing to a car that drove into the lake. The orange Chevrolet Camaro was in the water when they arrived.
A report from Complex Newsletter said he reportedly travelled at "a very high rate of speed" when he went off the road into the grassy area, flying off to the embankment of Lake Erie.
The vehicle did not have other passengers inside it at the time and no by-standers were injured, said a report from WFMJ-TV. According to witnesses, despite being in the water, Braswell was still in his seat trying to drive the vehicle forward.
When officers arrived, he allegedly told the police that he was stuck. Police said Braswell sounded like he was slurring his words and the football player also had difficulty explaining to the officers how his vehicle got stuck in the water.
This gave them probable cause to conduct a standard field sobriety test on Braswell. The breathalyzer used recorded high alcohol levels that are beyond Ohio's set limit.
The blood alcohol content limit set by the state is 0.08. Braswell, however, refused to have a chemical test done for him.
Braswell, a 23-year-old Ohio native, was a Central Catholic graduate who played as a wide receiver in college for Youngstown State University from 2015 to 2019. He grew up in Toledo, about 50 miles off Put-in-Bay. He later on signed as an undrafted free agent for the Arizona Cardinals in May.
Complex Newsletter noted that neither Braswell nor the Cardinals have issued a statement regarding the incident.
